Fix a problem | BT Help.BT Internet Email Settings – The Guide You Need

New state of the art PC up and running today. Went to Mail to try to get it to recognise my btinternet. Why will it not do so? Constant messages “your Btinternet settings are out of date” it worked perfectly OK via Windows Live Mail on the 6 year old predecessor PC and “please update the password for this account” which I was not minded to do via Mail in case it fouled up the BT Email login.

The most inexplicable feature was the incorrect display of sixteen black dots, after a failed sync and a visit to Settings, in the Password box when the correct password would have taken 10 dots.

I have deleted and reinstated the btinternet email account and tried over and over again to make it work, but without success, and I am utterly baffled by the mysterious 16 dot incorrect password. Does anyone else have anything to suggest, as long as it is not “ring the BT Indian help centre”, that great oxymoron of our times?

The error you have been experiencing with the Mail app in Windows- in most cases- is caused by either an outdated SMTP server settings or the account password has changed. However, you did mention that you have already gone through the whole nine yards or re-setting up the account; we recommend running the Windows app troubleshooter. This will scan and run a diagnostic test- for faults in the program, and corrects them should they be found.

Although the recurring “Btinternet settings out of date” message seems to have gone away today, the key problem still seems to be the rogue appearance of 16 black dots in the account settings password box every time I try to change this to the correct 10 digit password.

This is interesting. Have you already tried the Windows app troubleshooter? Just click the link, it should take you directly to the download. You may go ahead and install it. If that does not work, a Windows System restore or re-installation may already be appropriate; since this is a program that is built-in to the operating system.

You may follow that latter link to learn more about restoring Windows. Thanks for the further response. I had already tried the troubleshooter. The idea of System Restore, only a matter of days after I had followed good practice by downloading an immediate Windows update as soon as the new PC was up and running, was far from appealing, but thankfully I found a new fix It took less than a minute to link the email account and retrieve messages on the new PC.

It would perhaps be unwise to express a further opinion about Windows Mail and the time I found myself wasting in my attempt to make it work with Btinternet, so I will leave it at that. However this frustrating and annoying fault has been around for a couple of years at least.

There is no pattern to its appearing or the duration of the problem. It can appear almost daily for a time, monthly or sometimes I get a few months problem free. When it appears it may last for a few boot ups usually over a few days or just for one. I have checked my settings as recommended by some solutions.

My password is accepted if I use web mail but not by Mail for Windows 10 when the problem appears and a windows appears asking for it. I’ve had a number of updates to Windows 10 since the problem started and it amazes me that this problem has never been addressed by any of the updates.

In reply to WilliamSlessor’s post on August 3, I have tried many help forums to find a solution to this problem. None has helped. I too can use web mail to view my bt mails and outlook works fine. BT simply blame Windows and want to charge to help with a solution.

I’m migrating all my mails to Outlook but that takes time. This site in other languages x.

When btinternet. If you cannot login to to BT email, or you are receiving server offline messages, then share exactly when and how this occurs below. I have had a message saying someone has logged into my account but I cant access my account or MY Bt to correct it.

I m getting the same issues since yesterday too. I ve changed my password and still not able to log on. I use it for work all the time! They keep telling me all is ok, but I have no confidence in them whatsoever. They are shockingly inefficient. On and off unable to send emails using SMTP. Wrong password message. This is on Thunderbird W10 and Samsung Mail. I have had this before and BT reset my password and it then worked, BT claim it is the programs not their server that is at fault.

Authentication error, server access denied to primary email address tonight at 5pm. Just restart the server!

Please switch on your wifi or mobile data. Had this for last hour. It then says it is sending a verification code to the BT email address, but it never arrives. What is going on? Anyone else got this problem? I have a Gmail account and my sister who has a BTinternet account has not been receiving my emails for several days. We found out her BT intenet profile had changed and that all emails from Gmail were blocked. No idea how it got changed , but after she unblocked it she now gets my gmails OK. No passwords accepted for BT email or BT account. Spent 45 mins on phone while BT customer service tried to help. Then he was told this is a general BT problem. I can access bt email on my phone but cannot log in on the website, it just says incorrect information.

Husbamd just bought SamsungS20 phone which has latest version 11 of operating system. According to BT this is due to migrating emails on to a different server!!

I have had major probs on my S9 with emails. Either cant sign in or BT delete all my emails. What the hell is going on with BT. It seems not. BTemail is not working on Samsung Galaxy A Fine via laptop. Get message to say BT email not working.

Also same message when using other apps on phone. I have had problems with BT since last July, I should be on BT basic but they will not recognise my universal credit clain, I have asked for an e-mail address to send copies to and I was told to google it!!!

BT have no idea what the problem is so tried to tell me there was nothing they could do. Messages that have disappeared in my inbox are not in my deleted items. BT YAHOO system on Mac mail started working again this afternoon… and now has stopped again… not receiving or sending mails… what is the problem… again? It was fine yesterday 23rd November then I did a Microsoft update which took 2 hours! I have logged in to my email today and the delete option is no longer there.

Absolute Maggots. The whole thing is so clunky now and glitchy, especially contacts — the list is too long to write all the problems here. Please revert back to how it was before you fiddled with it and turned it to trash!

Simple cannot get into my emails from my laptop, ever since they have changed the emails it has been a disaster. The content of messages do not show.

I just get the tiny swirly thing all the time. I cannot login to my BTemail account. I just tried to verify this account on Gmail which is set up to feed into BT Yahoo email and I find that every message sent by my gmail for at least the last month has been rejected by the Daemon because it is recognised by BT email as spam!

BT come along with thier new email app and its hopeless. Everytime I do something other than read an email on my Iphone the app freezes and I have to switch my phone off and on again to un freeze it.

I updated my BT email password yesterday and since then I have not been able to use email on any of my devices, despite changing the password on them also.

I have recently been upgraded to BT Halo 1. Could this have caused the problem, or is the BT email server down? I was using my old BT Yahoo mail account right up until today. I had to do a reset, and can now access my BT account, I can also do this on my desktop using the same login name and new password. Same on my desktop? All my folders and important emails are in that? I have the same problem — I cannot receive or send BT emails from any Apple device.

Sorry, it looks like you are not connected to the Internet, please recheck connectivity and try again. That is what I get when I try to access email via desktop but can connect from my phone via gmail.
