I love to watch Tim paint and talk about what he is doing. He does give you technical information that will help with any project, but more importantly in my book, he shows us how to paint.
He is a traditional and digital artist and he is good at both mediums. We are in for a real treat; we will come away from the videos inspired. To gain entrance, you do have to register, but registration is free. Inside there is a store, lots of tutorials…both Painter and Photoshop, but more importantly, the TAQ community is passionate about making art and willing to share with each other. There are various levels of membership. I am sure there is one just right for you.
I was going to show mine about the technology of the variants, but realized that Tim talks about that too. His will probably be all that some need. If you want a bit more technical information, then look at my two videos. OK…need more information? In the next video I take one of the Buttery Oils variants and tweak it in different ways. When he bought the new computer I thought we would have lots of room to play…and there is lots of room, but I play alone. Does anyone know another nice computer virus that might like to room with me.
Let me know. Thank you again for your genius. Hi Kathleen, I hope your hand is better very soon. I think you will have fun with this brushes. Hugs, Skip. I love these brushes. I use the sargent brush a lot and these are wonderful, plus I have learned more about brush making in painter because of you and your generosity. Brush making is so easy in photoshop and I usually resort to that. I will try to use painter more now that I have a better understanding.

If you’re getting results that you want, then you are doing it the right way. At this point, I turned off the tracing paper. I didn’t want to use the background from the original photograph in the image.
Instead, I wanted to paint something that would make the portrait even more like a traditional oil painting. To achieve this, I painted the background of the image freehand like I would with a regular painting.
Turning off the impasto effect temporarily removed some of the distracting three-dimensional strokes and let me concentrate on getting the correct colors and values in the background. The painting was starting to look like a traditional oil painting. Using smaller brushes, I continued to refine the features by pulling color from the original photograph.

I wanted the background to look more like a piece of artist’s canvas, so I customized a paper texture to look like canvas. The Variable Chalk brush interacts wonderfully with paper textures. Then I roughly paint in a texture that looks like canvas in the corners of the image.
The default settings weren’t quite what I wanted so I tweaked a few things in the Apply Surface Texture dialog box. When you do this, make sure that you’re using the same paper texture you used to paint the original canvas.
This gave the painted canvas layer a nice, subtle – but definitely three-dimensional – appearance. Course outline. Introduction Hide these tips.
